Weddings Overview

Celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage with us...

In accordance with Archdiocesan Policy, couples contemplating marriage are to begin their preparation for the Sacrament of Marriage at least six months before their anticipated wedding date.

With its tall copper dome and high porticoed entrance, Our Lady of the Rosary Church blends majestically among the grand live oaks of New Orleans' oldest neighborhood. The church fronts Esplanade Avenue and faces the Fairgrounds (home to the world famous Jazzfest). Directly behind the church is the rectory, an ante bellum plantation home on Bayou St. John (the place where French explorers originally landed to establish the city of New Orleans).

A short drive down Esplanade Avenue in the direction of the river is the French Quarter, famous for its architecture, atmosphere, dining and other tourist attractions. As a result, within 5 minutes drive of our church are many hotels and restaurants which can host your rehearsal dinner, reception, accommodations for your guests and a place for your honeymoon.

An even shorter ride up Esplanade in the direction of the lake leads over the bayou and into City Park with its art museum and Botanical Gardens, both favorite places for wedding receptions. Carrollton Avenue and Canal Street are also very near with their hotels, reception halls and restaurants.

The present church was built in 1925 in Venetian Style with its high dome and large rounded interior arches. The interior is adorned with stained glass windows depicting the mysteries of the rosary, mosaic stations of the cross, 21 life sized white marble statues in the columns and altars, and a magnificent Calvary scene with life sized marble statues of Jesus on the cross with Mary, John and Mary Magdalene at his feet.

Most beautiful of all is the sanctuary with its white and deep orange marble walls accented by gold mosaics. Above the high altar is a panoramic mural of heaven with God the Father seated upon the throne. Below is Mary and the child Jesus presenting rosaries to St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Siena. To the right is Mary receiving her crown from Jesus as Queen of Heaven and to the left is the Annunciation. Intervening spaces are filled with angels.

We are truly proud of our exquisite church and its wonderful setting for the celebration of Holy Matrimony and the other Sacraments. There are anywhere from 50 to 70 weddings celebrated yearly in this holy, old world setting. Please do not delay to come by and visit so you can reserve your date for a day that will be remembered with much sentiment!
